SUBJECT: BASIC SCIENCE

TOPIC: REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM

STEP I: MEANING OF REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM: Human reproductive systems are tissues, glands and organs involved in producing offspring. There are organs in male and female that aid reproduction processes.

STEP II: IDENTIFICATION OF PARTS (HUMAN MALE AND FEMALE) AND THEIR FUNCTIONS:

Male Reproductive System: The male reproductive system consist of a penis, vas deferens (sperm duct), a pair of testes in a scrotal sac, urethra and some associated glands.

Functions of the male reproductive system:

1. Testes- produce sperm.

2. Urethra- carries sperm within the penis into the female organs.

3. Scrotal sac- protects testes.

4. Penis- introduces sperm into the vagina.

5. Vas deferens- transfer sperm from testes to seminal vesicle.

Female Reproductive system: The female reproductive system consist of the ovaries, oviducts, uterus and vagina.

Functions of the female reproductive system:

1. Ovaries- produce eggs.

2. Oviduct- carries egg cells to the uterus.

3. Uterus- receives and cares for developing foetus.

4. Vagina - Outlet from the uterus or womb.

Reproduction process:

1. The male and the female come together and have sex.

2. The male sex produces the male sperm (gametes) while the female sex produces the female egg cell (gametes or ovum).

3. The sperm is introduced into the female sex organ where it fuses with the egg in the fallopian tube during fertilization.

4. The fusion produces a zygote, which develops into a new offspring inside the uterus of the female.

5. The zygote then develops to embryo.

6. After nine months of pregnancy the female will give birth to a baby.

STEP III: PUBERTY AND SECONDARY SEXUAL CHANGES: Puberty and adolescence are two terms interlinked to each other representing certain changes and period of such changes. Puberty refers to the physical changes leading to sexual maturity in a boy or a girl. Adolescence refers to the transition period when psychological and social changes take place in a boy or girl. Puberty is the reason for the adolescence and this period may vary from one person to another.

Changes developed in boys:

1. Boys develop the heavier muscular body, wide shoulders, and narrow hips.

2. Enlargement of the voice box leads to a much deeper voice.

3. Maturation of testis and start of sperm production.

4. The growth of hairs on the chest.

5. Enlargement of Adam’s apple.

Changes developed in girls:

1. Rounded hips and breast development.

2. Matured ovaries and release of matured ovum.

3. Ovulation and menstruation initiate.

4.Mammary gland enlargement.
