Instructional Objectives

By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

  1. (Lower Domain – Recall/Knowledge): List at least three importance of agriculture to the farmer such as food, income, and employment.
  2. (Middle Domain – Comprehension): Explain with examples three importance of agriculture to the society e.g., provision of raw materials, food supply, and job opportunities.
  3. (Higher Domain – Application/Analysis): Analyze and justify three importance of agriculture to the nation, e.g., revenue generation through export, foreign exchange, reduction of food importation, and economic growth.

Previous Knowledge

Students already know that crops and animals are used for food and other domestic purposes.


Lesson Development

Step I: Introduction (5 minutes)

  • Teacher asks: “Where does the rice we eat come from?”
  • Students respond: “From farms”.
  • Teacher: “Good! That is agriculture. Today, we will learn about the importance of agriculture.”
  • Teacher writes topic on the board.

Step II: Importance of Agriculture to the Farmer (7 minutes)

  • Teacher explains:
    • Provides food for farmers and their families.
    • Provides income when farmers sell their produce.
    • Provides self-employment and independence.
  • Teacher shows real samples (maize, egg) to illustrate.
  • Students give examples: “My father sells palm oil to get money.”

Objective 1 achieved (Lower domain).


Step III: Importance of Agriculture to the Society (8 minutes)

  • Teacher explains with examples:
    • Provides food for the society (e.g., maize for pap, yam for pounded yam).
    • Provides raw materials for industries (cotton for textile, cocoa for chocolate, hides and skin for leather).
    • Creates job opportunities for people in transport, markets, and industries.
  • Teacher shows chart of industries using farm produce.
  • Students discuss in pairs and share one example: “Cocoa is used in producing Bournvita.”

Objective 2 achieved (Middle domain).


Step IV: Importance of Agriculture to the Nation (10 minutes)

  • Teacher explains:
    • Provides foreign exchange through export (cocoa, palm oil, groundnut).
    • Increases government revenue through taxes and trade.
    • Reduces importation of food items.
    • Improves economic development and rural growth.
  • Teacher gives example: Nigeria exports cocoa to earn foreign exchange.
  • Students work in groups of 3 to discuss how agriculture supports Nigeria’s economy and present briefly.

Objective 3 achieved (Higher domain).


Step V: Board Summary (3 minutes)
The teacher writes on the board:

Importance of Agriculture

  1. To the Farmer – provides food, income, employment.
  2. To the Society – provides food, raw materials, jobs.
  3. To the Nation – provides foreign exchange, reduces importation, improves economy.

Step VI: Evaluation (5 minutes)
Teacher asks:

  1. Mention two importance of agriculture to the farmer.
  2. Explain two importance of agriculture to the society.
  3. Discuss two ways agriculture contributes to the nation.

Students respond orally.


Assignment

Write short notes on two types of agriculture (crop farming and animal farming) with examples.
