CIRCULATORY SYSTEM (CONTINUED) Lesson note

PROPOSED LESSON PLAN/NOTE FOR THE TEN WEEK ENDING 18th NOVEMBER, 2022

2022/2023 ACADEMIC SESSION

SUBJECT: BASIC SCIENCE

TOPIC: CIRCULATORY SYSTEM (CONTINUED)

CLASS: GRADE 8

NUMBER OF STUDENTS: 22

AVERAGE AGE: 12+ YEARS

GENDER: MIXED

PERIOD: 7th AND 8th PERIOD ON TUESDAY AND FRIDAY RESPECTIVELY

TIME: 1:20-2:00

DURATION: 40 MINUTES

DATE: 14/11/2022

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES: By the end of the lesson the students should be able to;

1. discuss simple structure and functions of the heart;

2. discuss circulation of blood round the human body using its diagram;

3. explain problems/disease of the circulatory system.

 ENTRY BEHAVIOUR: The students are familiar with a farm, crops and farming tools.

INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNIQUE: Visual, questions and simulation.

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS: Pictures showing circulatory system.

DEVELOPMENT:

STEP 1: SIMPLE STRUCTURE AND FUNCTIONS OF THE HEART

STEP 2: CIRCULATION OF BLOOD ROUND THE BODY USING IT DIAGRAM

STEP 3: PROBLEMS/DISEASES OF THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM

1. Anaemia: This is a blood disease resulting from shortage of red blood cells in the blood. As a result of this, less oxygen is supplied to the cells and to the entire body system. There is usually general tiredness for the sufferer because the body requires more energy which it does not get for proper body functioning.

2. Sickle cells: This is a kind of anaemia caused by abnormally shaped (sickle shaped) red blood cells. These red cells cannot carry oxygen, hence the patient faints occasionally. The disease is inherited.

3. Leukaemia: This is another disease of the blood that occurs as a result of over production of the white blood cells. Hence, the balance of the blood components is altered so that there is imbalance of red and white blood cells. Intensive radiation exposure or moderately intense exposure for long periods increases the risk of acute and chronic lymphocytic leukaemia.

EVALUATION: Oral Questions

1. Discuss simple structure and functions of the heart;

2. Discuss circulation of blood round the human body using its diagram;

3. Explain problems/disease of the circulatory system.

SUMMARY/CONCLUSSION: Blood diseases include anaemia, leukaemia, and sickle cell anaemia.

ASSIGNMENT:

1. Discuss simple structure and functions of the heart;

2. Discuss circulation of blood round the human body using its diagram;

3. Explain problems/disease of the circulatory system.
