MEANING OF
ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT THROUGH AGRICULTURE: This entails putting money into
one’s hand and making one able to earn a living or to earn money to be able to
solve his needs.
ECONOMIC
EMPOWERMENT:
Agriculture provides a means of Economic empowerment up to 75% of the
population in diverse ways. Some people are empowered directly in agricultural
production while others earn their living by working in agro-based industries
that make use of agric raw materials yet some are involved in marketing and
research.
WAYS OF ECONOMIC
EMPOWERMENT: Agriculture
can put money into people’s hands through:
1. Rearing
livestock: The
rearing of livestock provides man a lot of products which could be sold to earn
money, food, feed, hides and skin, manure for the owner and also employment
opportunities for people.
2. Cultivation
of crops: Nigeria
depends entirely on the production of crops while the animals occupy a
secondary position. The farmer realizes some money from the selling of these
crops like maize, rice, yam, cassava, etc.
3. Sale of farm
produce: Some
people earn their living through their small scale or large marketing of
agricultural produce as wholesalers and retailers.
4. Rendering
services: There
are a whole lot of services that are related to Agric through which one could
earn a living. People who are hired to do such work are duly paid. Examples of
such services are farm cultivation, weeding of the farm, harvesting of crops,
packaging of agricultural products, etc.
5. Weeding,
packing, loading: Agric
empowers a large number of people. People are employed in some agric
establishment for weeding, packaging and loading.
6. Skill
acquisition: Vocational
skill acquisition training can make some to earn a living. A person with skill
acquisition in areas like yoghurt making, ice-scream making, snailry, piggery
and fish farming, soap and detergent production can earn lots of money
