MEANING OF SKILL ACQUISITION:
A
skill can be defined simply as an act or a task. A skill can be defined as the
familiar knowledge of any art or science and ability to performed practical
purposes to achieve desired results. For example, painting a picture, reading a
book, driving a car, skill of mathematics, physician, surgeon, mechanic, tailoring
and riding a bicycle. Skill simply means the knowledge and understanding of a
particular task. Skill is acquired deliberate, systematic and sustained
efforts. As its name implies, it is the ability to learn a skill. A skill can
be intellectual such as learning to listen, speak, read and write mathematics.
It can be manual such as learning to build or make something. A person acquires
skill by learning it. Students acquire skills through formal instructions and
practicing. Skill learning is a continuous and dynamic process without distinct
and definite stages.
There
is a variety of views about how learning actually occurs. Basically, we learn
in three main ways:
1. Cognitive
Learning: Learning
by receiving knowledge and information.
2. Affective
Learning: Learning
on a social level for example, by developing ideas of fair play and
self-esteem.
3. Motor
Learning: Learning
by acquiring physical skills.
REASONS FOR SKILL ACQUISITION:
1. Taking Risks: With
the help of a skill, an individual is able to take risks and also acquires the
ability to overcome risks.
2. Decision Making: Decision
making capacity of a person is influenced by his/her skills. For example, an
educated person can take better decisions.
3. Managing Emergency
Situation: Emergency situations can be handled
effectively by skilled persons.
4. Survival Strategy: Skill
acquisition helps people to get better employment which is necessary for
survival in the society.
5. Learning to Live
Together: Skills help people learn to live together and
progress further.
TYPES OF SKILLS
1. Farming: It
includes agriculture, poultry, farming, etc.
2.
Basic Computer Literacy: It includes
basic knowledge of computers.
3. Photography: It
includes the use of camera, taking photographs, editing photos, etc.
4. Internet, Internet Browsing,
Desktop Publishing and Email Operation: To achieve success, these
skills are very helpful. By using internet, a person can get information about
any topic. Emails have become a very quick method of communication nowadays.
Messages via Emails can be sent to any part of the world in no time. Desktop
Publishing (DTP) is the creation of document using page layout skills on a
personal computer.
