Firstly, if you're a school owner or an administrator, know that you're special and blessed. Many people don't know the mental and physical stress it takes to keep a school running. May God bless you for all your efforts.
That being said, the following things are necessary to be noted so as to help you make your school flourish better.
1. Salary is not the same as motivation or appreciation. Salary is payment of debt owed for work done while appreciation is a token used to show how much a worker's effort is recognized. Despite how more salary is than tokens of appreciation, appreciation carries more emotional weight and could motivate more.
2. Increased workload on a teacher may save you money but it will cost you extra ideas from your teachers because no one will be willing to give you ideas that will add to their workload especially when those additions are not financially compensated.
3. Improve your extracurriculars. Nobody actually enjoys academic subjects, it's the extracurriculars that makes school memorable for everyone.
4. Never owe your teachers salary. Never delay their salaries because you don't want them to leave your school. You will only end up having frustrated teachers and frustrated teachers will frustrate your school growth.
5. Don't see your teachers as beneath you or as pests who are only after your money. Take them as your partners and if you can trust a number of them, as co-owners.
6. The tactic of telling your teachers not to reveal their salaries to others doesn't actually work. Rather, develop a system that will attach an amount to each level.
7. No matter how you please parents, if you don't have a good structure and standard, they will still leave. They are not in your school to please you but after what will help their child grow.
8. The following are in order of sacredness and must not be compromised: (a) Your students academic and extracurricular improvement (b) teachers salaries, paid as and when due (c) school expenses and projects. (d) Your profits.
9. Place yourself on salary. And save the rest for your school. There are continuous school projects, extra money should be kept for such purposes.
10. No matter how loyal any member of staff may be, you are the only permanent member of staff.
11. No matter how nice you may want to be, exert discipline as you should because any wrong unaddressed can spread; it's easier for bad to influence good than the other way around.
12. Emphasize rewards for good deeds as much as you talk about discipline for bad deeds.
13. Set up structure for continuous promotion and salary increment.
14. Have other sources of income; thinking that your school will make you a millionaire is a dangerous thought that could frustrate the growth of your school. It's left for you: do you want your school to be among the best or you're just interested in how much money you can milk from it?
15. Grow at your own divine pace, don't be pressured into doing things that is not ideal for your school because you hear another school owner doing it. Just like marriage, choose what works for you.
16. Don't do more than you can afford because no matter what you do, parents and teachers will still complain. So, let your conscience lead and know that you are also part of those whose reward is from heaven.
17. Have a focus for your school. Like we've been taught, focus on your niche.
18. Anytime you want to give up, remember the why that caused you to start. Know that this road you're taking, others have taken it and are flying today. Don't give up just yet.
19. Have faith. You are great. Be that leader your citizens are seeking in the presidency.
