Subject:Basic Science
Class: Grade 8 (JSS 2)
Topic: Cell
🔍 What is a Cell?
A cell is the smallest unit of life.
All living things (plants and animals) are made up of cells.
👉 Think of a cell like a building block—just like blocks make a house, cells make living organisms.
🧠 Types of Cells
There are two main types of cells:
1. Plant Cell 🌿
Found in plants
Has a cell wall (gives shape and support)
Contains chloroplast (helps in making food)
2. Animal Cell 🐾
* Found in animals
* Does not have a cell wall
* Does not contain chloroplast
🧩 Parts of a Cell and Their Functions
1. Cell Membrane
Controls what enters and leaves the cell
2. Cytoplasm
Jelly-like substance where activities happen
3. Nucleus
Controls all activities of the cell (like the “brain” of the cell)
⚖️ Differences Between Plant and Animal Cells
| Feature | Plant Cell 🌿 | Animal Cell 🐾 |
| ----------- | --------------- | ----------------- |
| Cell Wall | Present | Absent |
| Chloroplast | Present | Absent |
| Shape | Usually regular | Usually irregular |
✏️ Class Activity
Draw and label a simple plant cell or animal cell.
📌 Key Points to Remember
* A cell is the basic unit of life
* All living things are made of cells
* The nucleus controls the cell
* Plant and animal cells are not exactly the same
