INTRODUCTION: Questions posed to the students include:

Question 1: What is science?

Expected Answer: Science is the study of nature.

STEP I: MEANING OF SCIENCE

The word ‘science’ is derived from the latin word “SCIENTIA” which means knowledge. Science is the body of knowledge obtained by methods based on observation, study, and practice. Science is the systematic process of the study of living and non-living things, so as to solve human problems, for the betterment of life. This system uses observation and experiments, to describe and explain natural phenomena. A person who studies science is known as a scientist. There are basically three main branches of science, namely:

1. Physics: Is the study of matter in relation to energy and other phenomena.

2. Chemistry: Is the study of the composition, properties and uses of matter.

3. Biology: is the study of living things.

Question 2: How is science important to you?

Expected Answers: Provision of electricity, roads, treated water.

STEPII: IMPORTANCE OF SCIENCE

1. Transportation: It has aided in the discovering and production of various means of transportation of people, goods and services from one place to another.

2. Communication: The knowledge of science has helped to reduce the world to global village, through the invention of the internet, the radio, the telephone, and telex.

3. Medicine: Development of drugs and vaccines for preventing and curing various diseases.

4. Electricity: Through the invention of electricity and various electrical and electronic appliances, the quality of life has improved greatly.

5. Agriculture: Science helps to improve agricultural practices, and enhance the production of food, for the growing population of the world.

Question 3. Why do you study science?

Expected Answers: We study science to obtain knowledge.

REASONS FOR STUDYING SCIENCE:

i. Science improves your analytical skills.

ii. It teaches us to learn how to solve problems.

iii. Science makes us be practical.

iv. Science is creative.

v. It helps us to make new inventions e.g. cars, phones, televisions sets, etc.

STEP III: SCIENTIFIC METHOD

Scientific methods are steps taken by scientists when trying to solve scientific problems. The scientific methods consist of:

1. Observation

2. Defining the problem (Identification of Problems)

3. Gathering and classifying data

4. Forming a hypothesis

5. Recording/ Interpretation

6. Drawing a conclusion

7. Theory and Law

SUMMARY/CONCLUSSION: Science is the body of knowledge obtained by methods based on observation, study, and practice. Importance; Transportation:  Communication, Medicine, Electricity, Agriculture.

EVALUATION: Oral questions

i. State the meaning of science;

ii. State the reasons for studying science(importance);

iii. Explain the scientific method;

ASSIGNMENT:

1. Define science.
