SUBJECT: AGRIC SCIENCE

TOPIC: MEANING, IMPORTANCE AND TYPES OF AGRICULTURE (CONTINUED)

CLASS: GRADE 7

NUMBER OF STUDENTS:

AVERAGE AGE: 11+ YEARS

GENDER: MIXED

PERIOD: 3RD&4TH PERIOD ON MONDAY AND WEDNESDAY RESPECTIVELY

TERM: FIRST TERM 

DURATION: 40 MINUTES

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES: By the end of the lesson the students should be able to;

i. state the importance of Agriculture to the farmer and society,

ii. explain the importance of Agriculture to the Nation.

ENTRY BEHAVIOUR/ PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE: Students have already studied the meaning and origin of agriculture in the previous week.

INSTRUCTIONAL METHODS/TECHNIC: Questions, simulation, quiz.

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS: Textbook, lesson note, laptop, projector, marker, whiteboard, Pictures showing a farm, market and produce, plant and animals.

INTRODUCTION: Questions posed to the students include

Question 1: What is the importance of agriculture to the farmer in our locality?

STEP I: IMPORTANCE OF AGRICULTURE TO THE FARMER AND SOCIETY

i. Agriculture supplies food to man and feed for his animals.

ii. Agriculture provides feedstuffs for animals.

iii. Agriculture provides people with employment and income.

iv. Agriculture helps man to appreciate God on what God created.

v. Agriculture provides resources for drugs to man. Plant like Neem, Quinine, Pyrethrium etc, have been grown by man and utilized to cure varying illnesses, some of which are also used as preventive drugs.

vi. Agriculture helps to beautify our environment through the cultivation of flowering plants and fruit trees grown around which equally helps to protect the environment.

vii. Agriculture provides sources of fuel for domestic and industrial purposes.

viii. Agriculture helps to maintain biodiversity in many Farm Game Reserves, and Agricultural Stations which preserve plant species and animal breeds.

ix. Agriculture provide the shelter in which we live and the clothes that we wear.

x. Cooking oil is obtained from the oil palm tree, shea butter tree, melon and groundnuts.

Question 2: What is the importance of agriculture to the nation?

STEP II: IMPORTANCE OF AGRICULTURE TO THE NATION

i. Employer of Labor: About seventy out of every hundred Nigerians are farmers.

ii. A source of income and foreign exchange earnings.

iii. Provision of raw materials to support industries.

iv. Source of Food.

The Federal and State Governments have also assisted farmers in very many ways. These include:

(i) Helping farmers to clear new land for farming with bulldozers.

(ii) Supply of fertilizers to farmers at low prices.

(iii) Supply of farm implements.

(iv) Building of Farm Input Centres or Agricultural Input Service Units (AISU).

(v) Construction of farm roads.

(vi) Giving of loans to the ordinary farmers for expanding their farm operations.

(vii) The Land Use Decree of 1978 provided a good opportunity for farmers to acquire sufficient land for their farms.

EVALUATION:  Oral questions.

1. Explain the importance of agriculture to the farmer and society.

2. Discuss the importance of agriculture to the nation.

SUMMARY/CONCLUSSION: Importance of agriculture include; employer of labor, source of food, source of income and foreign exchange earnings.
