Meaning of Environmental Sanitation

Environmental sanitation is the practice of keeping our surroundings clean in order to prevent diseases and promote good health. It involves proper disposal of refuse, good sewage systems, and clean living conditions.


Methods of Environmental Sanitation

1. Refuse Disposal

Refuse disposal means the proper way of getting rid of waste materials.

Common methods include:

  • Burning
  • Burying
  • Use of dustbins
  • Recycling

2. Sewage Disposal (Types of Toilets)

Sewage disposal deals with the removal of human waste from the environment.

Types of toilets include:

  • Pit latrine – a hole dug in the ground and covered with a slab
  • Bucket latrine – uses a bucket to collect human waste
  • Water closet – uses water to flush waste away
  • Bush system – using the bush or open field (not encouraged)

Biodegradable and Non-Biodegradable Materials

Biodegradable Materials

These are materials that can decay naturally and easily in the environment.

Examples:

  • Leaves
  • Food waste
  • Paper
  • Animal dung

Non-Biodegradable Materials

These are materials that do not decay easily and remain in the environment for a long time.

Examples:

  • Plastic bottles
  • Nylon bags
  • Glass
  • Metal cans

Importance of Environmental Sanitation

Environmental sanitation is important because it:

  • Prevents the spread of diseases
  • Promotes good health
  • Keeps the environment neat and attractive
  • Reduces pollution
  • Makes living areas safe and comfortable
