  1. Explain at least four ways to prevent drug abuse.

  2. Identify at least two drug control agencies in Nigeria and state their roles.

  3. Express negative attitudes towards drug abuse during class discussion.

Entry Behaviour

Students are familiar with medicines used in hospitals and at home.


Set Induction (5 Minutes)

Teacher asks:

  • “What do you take when you have headache?”

  • “Is Panadol a drug?”

  • “Can drugs be harmful?”

Allow students to respond.

Teacher introduces the topic:
“Today we are learning about Drug Abuse.”


Presentation (20 Minutes)

1. Meaning of Drug and Drug Abuse (5 Minutes)

Drug:
A drug is any substance taken into the body to prevent or treat diseases.

Drug Abuse:
Drug abuse is the improper use of drugs without medical advice or prescription.

Examples:

  • Taking overdose

  • Taking drugs not prescribed by a doctor

  • Using drugs for pleasure


2. Classification and Sources of Drugs (5 Minutes)

Classification of Drugs

  1. Stimulants – increase body activity (e.g., caffeine, cocaine)

  2. Depressants – slow down body functions (e.g., alcohol)

  3. Narcotics – relieve pain but can cause addiction (e.g., morphine)

  4. Hallucinogens – affect the brain and cause false perceptions

Sources of Drugs

  • Plants (e.g., marijuana)

  • Hospitals/pharmacies

  • Chemical laboratories

  • Local herbs


3. Medical Uses and Side Effects (5 Minutes)

Medical Uses

  • Relieve pain

  • Treat infections

  • Reduce fever

  • Prevent diseases (vaccines)

Side Effects

  • Drowsiness

  • Addiction

  • Organ damage

  • Mental illness

  • Death (in severe cases)


4. Prevention and Drug Control Agencies (5 Minutes)

Prevention of Drug Abuse

  • Say NO to peer pressure

  • Avoid bad friends

  • Follow doctor’s prescription

  • Participate in school clubs

  • Attend counseling

Drug Control Agencies in Nigeria

  1. NDLEA (National Drug Law Enforcement Agency)
    – Fights illegal drug trafficking.

  2. NAFDAC (National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control)
    – Regulates and controls drugs and food in Nigeria.


Class Activity (5 Minutes)

Students discuss in pairs:

“A friend offers you a drug to feel happy. What will you do?”

Some students share answers.


Evaluation (5 Minutes)

Ask the students:

  1. What is a drug?

  2. Define drug abuse.

  3. Mention two classes of drugs.

  4. State two side effects of drug abuse.

  5. Mention one drug agency in Nigeria.
